We are a collaboration of two professional singers with a passion for music and teaching. We call ourselves The Music Tree.

Our role is to help the individual discover their voice - their unique sound - through singing and music, whatever their age or ability. We guide their growth in vocal technique, stagecraft and musicianship, confidence and self-esteem - aiming above all to find joy in progressing in a musical world, to flourish and achieve goals.

Meet Julie & Martyn

A warm welcome awaits you for an in-person lesson in our music studio in Leicestershire, UK or online through a digital platform for a virtual singing lesson. All first lessons are a free of charge consultation to help you decide whether we are the right teacher for you.

Julie Moffat and Martyn Hill have had similar parallel careers in singing. Both studied at The Royal College of Music, London and have been engaged throughout the world in a wide range of vocal music from the Renaissance to contemporary premieres. We both teach all genders, ages, abilities, genres and levels of experience.

With our extensive experience as international performers and teachers we have a wealth of knowledge to pass on.

We help you, whatever your goal…

✅ Start singing

Perhaps you didn’t have the courage or opportunity to start singing? Having professional guidance means you set off on the right path by learning a healthy and safe way to sing without strain. You will also have regular feedback, encouragement, and support along the way to foster your enthusiasm.

✅ Get back into singing

‘I used to sing a lot but over recent times I’ve become rather rusty’. Don’t worry - our lessons begin with exactly where you are at. Every lesson is individual and shaped in accordance with your voice, your learning pattern and your goals in mind. We can also help with backing tracks to assist your practice.

✅ Just have a go

Not sure if you have a voice? Have you been told you sing out of tune? Can’t pitch a note?  Our first consultation lesson is free of charge with no commitment. Try out a session where you will be gently guided through some pitching and range exercises and you may be quite surprised what you can do. There is nothing more personally rewarding than ‘sounding’ your voice!

✅ Achieve grades

You may have sung before and want to come back to it now to improve your standard or work towards a grade exam, an audition, a concert performance or gig with a band. Some are preparing for college or university entrance, a local show or festival or want to make a recording. We’ve been there and helped pupils do all that  - and more  - and watched them succeed.  Everyone’s goals are different and there is no set curriculum except that which supports you and your vocal requirements.

✅ Refine a choir voice

Wow. Choir singing - can’t beat it. A community team of singers making uplifting music. But sometimes you may want to work on your own voice to keep up with auditions, ready yourself for that solo moment and to work for once just on your own sound so that you can blend with ease and develop your own sound.

✅ Hit new highs

Once you’re out on the circuit it can be a lonely road where you’re constantly challenged with new repertoire, languages, and situations and you want to appear experienced and professional and often have little time to prepare.  We can help you with our expertise and experience to coach you for those engagements and professional development moments.

'My aim is not to train the voice, but to set it free'.
